How to choose an oil separator correctly

When, after a modification to a 2.0 TSI or 1.8 TFSI, you notice oil traces in the intake tract, oiling around the turbo pipes, or a drop in the cleanliness of the intake system, the question is no longer whether you need an oil catch can, but how to choose the right oil catch can for the specific engine and specific use. This is not a universal accessory. An unsuitable setup can perform worse than the factory crankcase ventilation, and in some cases, create new problems.

How to choose an oil catch can according to its real purpose

The most common mistake is to start the selection from the appearance, not the function. An aluminum container in the engine compartment looks good, but that alone does not mean effective separation of oil vapors. The oil catch can should solve a specific problem - to reduce the amount of oil and condensation returning to the intake, to keep the intercooler and throttle body cleaner, and in certain configurations, to ease the system's behavior at higher boost.

If the car is standard or has a mild Stage 1 software, you are looking for a reliable and balanced solution that does not disrupt the correct operation of the PCV system. If the car has a larger turbo, aggressive software, frequent track use, or high loads, then you need a more serious capacity, better internal separation, and a well-thought-out configuration of hoses, inlets, and outlets.

In other words - the choice depends not only on the engine but also on how the car is driven. A daily driver, a fast street car, and a track build do not require the same thing.
